The term “Sonoma” can be confusing as it refers to three different things: Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley and the town of Sonoma! To clarify: the Sonoma Wine Country includes a spread over four different winery valleys. The four valleys are: Sonoma Valley (where the town of Sonoma is located), Alexander Valley, Russian River Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The latter three valleys feature some of the best wineries in California and meet in Healdsburg, where the Honor Mansion is located.

The Alexander Valley is located between the town of Healdsburg and the Calistoga area. This is the warmest of the three winery valleys. And because of the climate, the Alexander valley wineries are most renowned for their Cabernet Sauvignon. It is in this valley that you can find well known names such as Silver Oak, historic family wineries like Robert Young Estates, and hidden gems such as Garden Creek.
The Russian River Valley, located to the South of the Mansion, is the largest of the valleys. This area is closer to the ocean and gets coastal breezes which create cooler temperatures perfect to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. With Russian River Valley wineries starting in Healdsburg and spreading almost to the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Russian River, where you can kayak and canoe, and Armstrong Redwood State Park, with lots of hiking options, this area offers an endless amount of activities to fill your day.
The Dry Creek Valley is just to the northwest of the Honor Mansion. This area is most known for its amazing Zinfandels among the various types of Dry Creek wine. The smallest of the three valleys, the Dry Creek Valley still offers an array of some of the most beautiful vineyards in California. From the relatively unknown family Dry Creek valley wineries such as Unti and Zichichito better known, larger favorites, like Ferrari-Carano.
