Hoping to score points with your sweetie by booking a top-rated romantic retreat for Valentine’s Day?
No problem. Just in time for the holiday, online review giant TripAdvisor has published its list of the Top 10 Most Romantic hotels for 2013, and USA TODAY is here to take you on romantic hotels photo tour.
PHOTO TOUR: TripAdvisor’s most romantic hotels for 2013
The top 10 winning hotels are based on hotels with the best online reviews for romantic stays.
As you might expect, they’re the type of hotels that people book to propose to their loved one, ring in a memorable anniversary or celebrate some other special event. So it’s no surprise that many of them can be pricey.
The average rate at these 10 hotels costs around $319, according to TripAdvisor spokesman Brooke Ferencsik.
But it’s easy to spend more. A night’s stay in the best cliff-side room at the Post Ranch Inn in California’s rugged Big Sur, for example, can set you back $2,500 while the cheapest room for a prime summer Saturday night at Bardessono can set you back $800.

California: Home of most ‘Most Romantic’ hotels
“What’s interesting is that California has clearly captured the hearts of travelers,” observes TripAdvisor’s Ferencsik.
Five of the top 10 winning properties are located in the Golden State.
No. 1 is the Bardessono, a nearly 4-year-old, modern, environmentally friendly boutique hotel in Northern California’s famed Napa Valley winery region. The cheapest room will cost you between $400 and $800 a night, depending on the season. The lowest rates can generally be found in colder months, says Jim Treadway, who runs the hotel.
“The ambiance of the place is very sleek, contemporary and sexy,” he says. “There are fireplaces in every room and private patios.”
In-room spa treatments help boost Bardessono’s image as a romantic destination. Each guest room has a bathroom with a built-in spa table, so guests can order a couples’ massage. Before your masseuses arrive, a spa butler will draw your bath and toss in rose petals and your choice of bath salts, Treadway says. About 80% of spa treatments ordered at the hotel are for in-room treatments.
What helps boost the appeal of the 39-room Post Ranch Inn, a popular spot for the entertainment industry as well as people looking to propose to their loved one? It allows adults only, offers a dramatic, remote location and doesn’t make customers worry about extra charges such as resort fees or mini-bar bills.
“Each room has its own fireplace — a wood-burning fireplace, and all rooms come with complimentary wine and champagne,” says Mike Freed, who founded the hotel off Highway 1 20 years ago. “We don’t nickel and dime guests.”
Rooms overlook the Pacific Ocean and its restaurant also sits high atop the cliffs overlooking the ocean, Freed says. For nonconformist couples looking for something different, the hotel also offers triangular-shaped treehouse rooms.
